Pairs of scissors used in sewing.

Feudal-period gold and silver coins, eachi with its denomination and the mane of the issuiing authority. The large gold oban at lower right was minted in 1588 under the military dictator Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1600, immediately after the victory that gave Tokugawa Ieyasu dominion over most of Japan, a gold guild was established and, in the following year, a silver guild. Above the Hideyoshi oban is an Edo-period koban, or smaller gold coins; and, at lower left, two silver coins called chogin, also of the Edo period. The koban was in everyday use, but etiquette dictated that the oban be used on special occasions.
